Licking Memorial Hospital Accredited Continuing Medical Education

Mission Statement
Licking Memorial Hospital (LMH) is a not-for-profit community hospital committed to the highest ideals of medical care for its patients and community and the highest standards of excellence of its Medical Staff.  Continuing Medical Education (CME) is indispensable in enabling LMH to meet these commitments.

Mission
The mission of our CME program is to enhance the knowledge and skill of our physicians and healthcare team members for the promotion of performance improvement, patient outcomes, and to improve the health of our community.

Purpose
The purpose of the program is to fill identified educational gaps which allow physicians and healthcare team members to improve patient outcomes by enhancing physician knowledge, competence, and performance in practice.

Content
LMH’s CME program includes a broad range of primary care, specialty, and subspecialty topics chosen through a comprehensive needs assessment process. The needs assessment process identifies professional practice gaps in physician knowledge, competence, and/or performance, defined as differences between current practice and best practice. Continuing medical education content is chosen for its relevance to the target audience's current or potential scope of professional activities.  CME activities are chosen with the expectation of improving competence, performance, and/or patient outcomes. CME activities are chosen in educational formats appropriate for the setting, objectives, and desired results of the activity. CME activities are developed in the context of desirable physician attributes, including Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competencies. CME activities are developed independent of commercial interests; however, when applicable, CME activities receiving commercial support are managed according to ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.  CME activities are developed to maintain a separation of promotion from education.  CME activities are designed to advance improvements in health care and not proprietary commercial interests.

Target Audience
Educational activities are designed to support the professional and educational needs of the LMH Medical Staff. Physicians in the community are encouraged and welcome to attend our educational activities.  Education is targeted for physicians; however, we encourage LMH healthcare team members to attend relevant activities that are meaningful to their practice.

Types of Activities
The types of activities utilize current technologies and methodologies appropriate for adult learners in a variety of formats including but not limited to: regularly scheduled series, quality improvement and quality assurance case-based activities, symposia and conferences, panel discussion, interactive workshops, written enduring materials, and recorded enduring materials.  We select education formats and design our instruction based upon the needs and preferences of our learners and the outcomes that we strive to achieve.

CME activities will be designed in accordance with the essentials as outlined by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) to assist physicians in meeting their educational needs. This mission and the overall CME program will be reviewed annually at a minimum to meet ACCME guidelines and to assure it continues to align with our organizational goals and need for continuing medical education.

Expected Outcomes
LMH is committed to clearly linking the identified needs with measured change in knowledge, competence, and when appropriate, change in performance and patient health.  LMH will strive to assist our physicians by the dissemination of new medical knowledge and providing required education credits to help them maintain their professional certifications and licensures.

The expected results are to:
  • Assist physicians and healthcare team members in gaining competency and improving performance to become better able to provide higher quality care to the patients they serve.
  • Enhance clinical leadership.
  • Optimize appropriate prescribing behaviors.
  • Promote the practice of evidence-based medicine.
  • Improve the health and health awareness of the community we serve.

LMH will evaluate the effectiveness of those activities through a combination of provider feedback, program evaluation, and testing scores. Outcomes will be incorporated into the design of future educational programming and evaluated to measure the effectiveness of the instructional models.

The expected results are to increase professional competence, improve performance in practice, and improve patient outcomes.

Accreditation
The Licking Memorial Hospital Continuing Medical Education program is accredited with commendation by the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  The Monday programs and Tumor Board conferences have been reviewed and are acceptable for credit by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
