Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Colon Cancer Awareness Month Nationally, the month of March is dedicated to colon cancer awareness.  Licking Memorial Health Systems (LMHS) continues to raise awareness during March through a community campaign that includes a dedicated website, www.LMHSColonHealth.org.  Launched in early 2019, the website contains detailed information and resources about colorectal cancer and features high-fiber recipes and fitness tips.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancers in both men and women.  In 2020, it is estimated that there will be 104,610 new cases of colon cancer and 43,340 new cases of rectal cancer.  Preventative screenings are the best way to detect pre-cancerous polyps and remove such prior to becoming cancerous.  Diet, weight and exercise are strongly linked to the risks and prevention of colon cancer, and simple lifestyle changes such as healthier eating and increased activity may help decrease the risk of the disease.

LMHS encourages those who are at the age of 45 or older to participate in a colon screening for the benefit of their health.  Don’t delay!  Contact your primary care physician today to schedule a colon screening.
