On Tuesday, November 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine pediatric formulation for children, ages 5 to 11, following a thorough review of the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had granted an emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for this age group on October 29.
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children, ages 5 to 11, is administered as a two-dose primary series, three weeks apart, with the dose being one-third lower than that used for individuals 12 years of age and older. According to the CDC, the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine can be administered at the same visit as a flu vaccination or other childhood immunization.
