Pathologists provide professional services to patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Pathology services are included in one of two broad areas, anatomic or clinical pathology.
Clinical pathology encompasses overseeing the operation and quality assurance of laboratory testing at the central hospital laboratory, at some physician office laboratories and at the bedside (point-of-care testing). Clinical pathology practice often includes assisting clinical physicians in the proper ordering and interpretation of laboratory tests.
Anatomic pathology includes surgical pathology and cytopathology. Licking Memorial Health System provides full-service surgical pathology. Specimens are processed on-site and are interpreted by our pathologists. In addition, we provide an extensive selection of special stains and immunostains. Since work is done on-site, most surgical pathology results are available within 24 hours (Monday through Friday). Cytopathology (the study of disease at the cellular level) specimens are also prepared and interpreted on-site. Cytopathology turnaround time depends on specimen type. Virtual breast prognostic indicator testing is available. Virtual flow cytometry is available if needed.
